Technologies of Gaming
Why do we play games? Our course this semester approaches gaming as serious work by proceeding along three dimensions simultaneously. First of all, we'll explore the philosophical space of gaming presented through foundational texts in Greek and Roman culture (Plato and the Stoics, primarily). Secondly, we'll read contemporary accounts of gaming influenced by these foundational perspectives. And most importantly, we'll encounter notions of play empirically: we'll have a "reading list" of video games that will constitute the heart of the course. By working in the three spaces simultaneously, we'll be able to use play to inform our reading of philosophical texts and think philosophically about gaming.
